Caring for Your Sunglasses in 6 Simple Steps

1. Keep in a Case

Prevention is key! It’s easy to throw your sunnies in your bag, in the car console, on the cafe table or on your head, but keep in mind that a case is the best place. Many surfaces can lead to scuffs on the frame and lens scratches, it can also damage the polarisation too.

2. Don’t Wear On Your Head

3. Avoid Excessive Heat

In Australia especially, the heat and beach are two things we love. However too much of these can damage your sunnies. To avoid warping the frame means avoiding excessive heat which can happen by leaving your sunglasses in the car on a hot sunny day. It’s a simple step, but one that is easily skipped and forgotten.

4. Counteract Salt and Sand

A day at the beach in the sun calls for sunnies but not scratched ones. The salty water and sand are elements our skin thrives on, but for our sunnies it can wear down polarisation and anti-reflection layers. When sand comes into contact with sunnies the small granules can not only get caught within the lens and frame but can also scratch the surfaces. For those with mirrored or anti-reflective lens pay extra attention to cleaning away a day at the beach as these layers are more sensitive. Take your sunnies along with you but protect them in the case they came with. If they have enjoyed the day as much as you have, be sure to rinse off any particles in tap water and leave on a bench to dry before cleaning.

5. Use a Microfibre Soft Cloth

6. Protect with a Cleaning Spray

Now that you have your cloth you can step it up a notch by adding a gentle lens solution spray into your cleaning routine. Cleaning sprays are equipped with all the ingredients for optimal lens clarity. Using a high-quality cleaning spray will help build an oleophobic layer which with frequent use will help repel oils, fingerprints and water-buildup on the lens. It is a lot more efficient than detergent and water or that quick lick and wipe you had in mind.
